Up the Withywindle

Emma and Tolkien

This is my own work, written in tribute to one of the greatest Elves who ever walked Middle Earth. (Sincere apologies to Tolkien if, supposing he could see this, he should be offended.)

Alas! For Glorfindel the Fair
The light of sun was on his hair
And noble was his shining helm
As fought he for our dying realm

Alas! For Glorfindel the Wise
The light of stars shone in his eyes
He nobly ruled and bravely fought
He sacrificed him not for naught

We mourn for Glorfindel the Gold
His mantle shone in every fold
He stood and evil great defied
And not in vain, in triumph died

We laid to rest his head so bright
His body strong, broken in fight
O Glorfindel! We weep for thee
Now lost to us beyond the sea

Here’s the tune (also composed by myself):

And an instrumental version (You might recognize this as the withywaffle theme):
